Author Interview-Vicky Loebel

Tell me about your book.
Keys to the Coven is a tightly-plotted combination urban fantasy/romance with an original take on magic, demons, and witches. In my universe, demons are disillusioned dead people who wind up as bureaucrats of the afterlife, processing souls, policing magic and, in the case of my hero, Max, operating as an undercover agent in the living world.
In order to do things like hang out on Earth and defeat supernatural bad guys, demons need (my fictionalized version of) karma, which serves both as a source of energy and a commodity they can change. There are a lot of ways to get karma—good deeds, for instance—but the most popular method is through glorious, life-affirming sex with a live human.
Max loves his job.
What’s next for you?
I’m currently working on the second book in my historical (1920s) Urban Fantasy series Speakeasy Dead. The series is set in the same universe, in the same witches’ family as to Keys to the Coven and serves as a prequel.  (Due 2015)
I’m also doing a sweet contemporary romance, Vacation Bride, set on the tropical island of St. John in the US Virgin islands, about a woman who wants to take her sick father on vacation but winds competing for a rich husband on an internet reality show. (Due fall, 2014)
Who are your writing role models?
My personal role models tend to be the writing friends who have shown the most perseverance and kept the best attitudes. Regina Duke is at the top of the list for being talented, persistent, and an absolute sweetie-pie.
As far as writing goes, I love good plotters who show a strong sense of humor. Jim Butcher, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Patrick O’Brian top the list.
How do you balance your day-to-day commitments with your writing life?
It’s an eternal teeter totter. I’ve learned to really push on days where I’ve got a clear calendar for writing, and to accept that some days it just ain’t gonna happen.
What are your other passions outside of writing?
I have a hot and cold lifelong affair with my yoga practice, which sticks around offering unconditional love no matter how much I neglect it. I sort of like my dogs. And kids. And there’s a husband in there, somewhere.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Both Keys to the Coven and Speakeasy Dead are available as audiobooks read by Emily Beresford and Nick Podehl.  Once  you’ve got the ebook, the whispersynced audio can be had for two bucks.

Blurb:
To become a demon, you must die in complete and utter despair. Three hundred years ago, Max passed that test with flying colors and joined the afterlife resolving never again to have innocent blood on his hands. Now a successful Demonic Intervention Agent, Max has been given the job of breaking Felicity Woodsen's family curse. But what she doesn't know, what Max can't bring himself to tell her, is that completing his mission almost certainly means her death.
When Felicity inherits her mother's coven, she learns each firstborn Woodsen daughter must become the consort of an evil-arch demon. Felicity's only hope is to ally with the mysteriously charming Max. But is saving her body from one demon worth the price of risking her soul with another?
